Carnival @ BSF 2010 (Singapore)

1st BASE at 4 ACTMP
1st BASE was pleased to have the opportunity to host an exhibition booth at the recent “Tropical Infectious Diseases and Vectors in a Vibrant and Ever-changing Environment” Congress at the Raffles Town Club. Organised by the Singapore Society of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Environmental Health Institute and REDI Centre, the 3-day event started on Wednesday, 2 June 2010 and attracted close to 350 delegates from around the region.
At the event, we showcased our products and services in particular in DNA Sequencing, Oligonucleotide Synthesis as well as Next-Generation Sequencing and Custom Research Services. In addition, we also introduced PrimeTime Assays and Probes, as well as High-throughput Plate Oligos from Integrated DNA Technologies, Inc. (IDT). 1st BASE is the exclusive distributor of IDT in South East Asia.

First BASE Seminar at MKAK
On 26 May 2010, First BASE Laboratories organized a “DNA Sequencing Data Analysis Seminar “ for researchers at the Makmal Kesihatan Awam Kebangsaan (MKAK), Kuala Lumpur.
The half-day session was well-attended by close to 40 staff members from the institute. At the event, our technical support officers shared pertinent information on best practices in analysing DNA sequencing data and how to prepare samples (Plasmid DNA and PCR products) to gain the best mileage with 1st BASE DNA Sequencing.
Participants gave positive feedback as everyone had the opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences.
Specially thanks to En. Khairul, Head of Virology Department; Ms. E.Kavithambigai A/P Ellan, Science Officer of Molecular Lab and Ms. Nurul Aina Murni Binti Che Azid, Science Officer of Virus Isolation Lab for their valuable support and assistance in organizing the event. We look forward to conducting more of such customer-focused seminars in the future.
1st BASE forges strategic partnership with Biopolis Shared Facilities (Singapore)
On 20 April 2010, 1st BASE signed a service agreement with Singapore’s Biopolis Shared Facilities of Biomedical Sciences Institutes, funded by and under the purview of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), for the provision for Sanger Single Pass Capillary DNA sequencing services to A*STAR.
With this joint partnership, 1st BASE will provide Sanger Single Pass DNA Sequencing services to the entire institution for six months. Under the agreement, 1st BASE will boost the quality and value of Sanger DNA Sequencing services brought to researchers in A*STAR. In return, A*STAR researchers will now find it easier to enjoy 1st BASE’s industry-leading services through integration of billing systems and consolidated collection points.

First BASE Roadshow in Penang 2010
On 6 and 7 April, First BASE Laboratories organised it's first roadshow in Penang. The 2-day event which took place at Universiti Sains Malaysia and Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals were well-attended.

First BASE congratulates recipient of the UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowships Award 2010
Our heartiest congratulations to Ms Tan Yifen from the Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang who was awarded the UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowships 2010 Award in Paris in March this year.
This prestigious award, introduced in 2000, is one of L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” Awards which encourages, supports and develops the talents of young women scientists. Each year, the Award is given to three researchers selected from five regions, namely Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe & North America and Latin America & the Caribbean.
Ms Tan was honoured for her research on the function of small non-coding ribonucleic acids (RNAs) expressed during the biofilm formation phase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (an opportunistic human pathogen) that commonly resides in soil and water, which can cause severe infection in immuno-compromised patients. The outcome of this molecular study could provide a basis for future studies in developing anti-microbial medication.
As a regular service provider of DNA Sequencing service to her laboratory under the supervision of Dr Razip Samian, 1st BASE is excited to share her scientific breakthrough and achievements. We would like to wish her all the best in her pursuit of post-doctoral studies in Harvard Medical School in Boston in the United States.

Accreditation of BioNexus Status
In 2007, First BASE Laboratories Sdn Bhd was conferred the designation of BioNexus Status under the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp). The BioNexus Status is an award given to local biotech companies and organizations to nurture their involvement in the growing biotechnology industry In Malaysia.

Investment Funding Opens New Market For 1st BASE
A signing of agreement earlier 2007 between 1st BASE and venture capitalist, Photonics Venture Capital has provided opportunities to bring 1st BASE to greater heights in the Life Sciences and Biomedical Science industries.
The investment will allow 1st BASE to rapidly ramp up production facilities to offer high-throughput methodologies and manufacture an even wider range of products and services for the research communities in the Asia Pacific region.
